Roger Wiltshire became Secretary General at the British Air Transport Association (BATA) in 2000, following a thirty year career at British Airways. He represented UK-registered airlines during the following ten years – a period which saw operational crises (eg 9/11, Icelandic volcano), much stronger security measures, a large increase in air travel taxation and the continued restructuring of the industry. It was also a period during which the broader aviation industry established joint environmental strategies including the world-leading Sustainable Aviation initiative in the UK.
In retirement, Roger maintains his interest in aviation environmental matters. He is a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Greener by Design Executive Committee, a specialist group which encourages discussion and research including an annual conference on key aviation environmental issues.
